Being full of energy and activity is quite natural for children because physical activities like running, jumping, climbing, playing sports, and sometimes even falling are very natural for them. However, being in continuous pain, walking with a limp, experiencing swelling, changing in posture, and moving problems cannot always be considered normal for children.

There are some orthopedic problems that are temporary among children and will go away as the child develops, while others might need attention and even treatment. A parent should notice signs of potential orthopedic issue in time, in order to avoid affecting movement, development, and everyday activity.

Pediatric orthopedist specialises in children’s orthopedic problems.

What Is Pediatric Orthopedics?

Pediatric orthopedics is a specialized field of orthopedics that concentrates on disorders of the musculoskeletal system in infants, children, and adolescents.

The pediatric orthopedist recognizes that children’s bones and joints are growing and developing. Disorders relating to development, posture, gait, fractures, sports injuries, spinal deformities, and bone deformities may need a different treatment approach than adult orthopedics.

Among the issues an orthopedic pediatrician will evaluate include the following:

  • Atypical gait
  • Pain in limb or joint
  • Fractures
  • Injuries from sports
  • Scoliosis
  • Knock knees or bowlegs
  • Foot and ankle disorders
  • Growth-related disorders
  • Congenital musculoskeletal issues

Objective is not just treatment of pain but understanding of how any disease might affect development and movement of the child.

What Are the Most Common Orthopaedic Problems in Children?

Orthopedic concerns that may arise in children could be as little as simple injury issues and could escalate to more complicated ones necessitating specialized surveillance.

Fractures

Bones may be broken due to falling or accidental events. Bone fractures will result in pain, swelling, soreness, and difficulties in movement of the affected limb. It will be difficult for the children to give an exact account of what happened, especially when they are still young.

Sports Injuries

Sprains, strains, injuries to the ligaments, or other musculoskeletal injuries can be suffered by children who participate in sports such as football, cricket, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, and others.

Pain that is recurring as a result of the physical activity should be checked and not encouraged to play through severe pain.

Scoliosis

The main features of scoliosis include an unusual spine curvature. In case of a child, the symptoms may be noted through such symptoms as uneven shoulders, asymmetrical waist, prominence in the back region, and leaning posture.

Bowlegs and Knock-Knees

There are certain types of deviations that might be within normal limits during the growth period and can resolve themselves over time. Some deviations are quite severe and need to be assessed.

Foot and Walking Problems

However, it may occur that any changes in the gait, difficulty limping, strange position of the feet, as well as inability to do regular things show the presence of some disorders in the musculoskeletal system.

Although it is often believed that a limp results from an injury, there are many other causes, including bone fractures, arthritis, and others.

What Are the Warning Signs That a Child May Have an Orthopaedic Problem?

Parents should pay attention to changes that persist or interfere with normal activities.

Possible warning signs include:

  • Persistent bone, joint, muscle, or limb pain
  • Unexplained limping
  • Difficulty walking or running
  • Avoiding sports or physical activities
  • Repeated falls
  • Swelling around a joint
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Changes in posture
  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • Visible changes in limb alignment
  • Persistent back pain
  • Repeated injuries in the same area
  • Difficulty putting weight on a limb

A single minor symptom does not necessarily mean a child has a serious orthopaedic condition. However, recurring or worsening symptoms deserve professional evaluation.

Common Causes of Fractures in Children

Fractures may occur in routine activities carried out by children. The following are some of the common causes:

  • Falls when playing
  • Injuries at playgrounds
  • Bicycle injuries
  • Sport-related injuries
  • Falls from height
  • Injuries caused by road accidents
  • Impacts
  • Twisting

There is a difference between children’s and adults’ bones since children’s bones are still developing and usually more likely to heal. However, some fractures affect growth plates.

Signs of a Possible Fracture

Parental concern for their child regarding any of the following signs would require medical examination:

  • Pain following an injury
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Difficulty moving the limb
  • Weight-bearing issues
  • Crookedness or deformity of the limb

Even if the child can move the injured limb, it does not exclude the possibility of a fracture.

Common Warning Signs Parents Should Not Ignore

Warning Sign  What Parents May Notice  What It Could Indicate  When to Seek Medical Advice
Persistent limping  Child walks unevenly or avoids putting weight on one leg  Injury, joint problem, inflammation, or another orthopaedic condition  If it persists, worsens, or has no obvious cause
Joint pain  Repeated pain in the knee, hip, ankle, or other joint  Injury, overuse, inflammation, or developmental condition  If pain keeps returning or affects daily activities
Swelling  Visible swelling around a joint or limb  Injury, inflammation, or other underlying problem  If swelling is significant, persistent, or painful
Difficulty walking or running  Child avoids activities they previously enjoyed  Pain, weakness, injury, or movement-related problem  If the change is persistent or sudden
Uneven shoulders or hips  One shoulder or hip appears higher than the other  Possible spinal or alignment problem  Arrange an assessment if the difference persists
Repeated falls  Child falls more often than expected for their age  Balance, gait, strength, or musculoskeletal concern  If falls are frequent or accompanied by pain
Limited movement  Child cannot fully bend or straighten a joint  Injury, swelling, stiffness, or joint condition  Prompt evaluation, especially after an injury
Visible limb deformity  Arm or leg appears unusually positioned after injury  Possible fracture or significant injury  Seek urgent medical assessment
Fever with joint pain/swelling  Pain accompanied by fever, warmth, or redness  May indicate infection or significant inflammation  Seek prompt medical evaluation

When Should I Take My Child to a Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist?

The following are some of the recommendations that should be made in case of persisting symptoms, unusual walking patterns, repeated bone fractures, bone deformities, and abnormalities in the growth of the musculoskeletal system; the parents should see a pediatric orthopedist.

There are particular instances where a specialist visit is recommended, including:

  • Persistent limping
  • Severe spinal curvature
  • Difficult fractures
  • Frequent sports injuries
  • Congenital deformity
  • Growth problems of the limbs
  • Persistent joint pain
  • Problematic mobility

Some instances call for immediate attention, rather than making a routine visit, such as a deformed limb, inability to walk following an injury, or swelling.

Why Do Children’s Bones Heal Faster Than Adults?

Bones of children are still growing and usually possess good self-repairing capabilities. In addition, children’s bones are less rigid than those of adults.

This means that the majority of bone fractures amongst the children can heal without any surgery through immobilisation of the bones by the use of casts and splints. However, growth plate fractures and displaced fractures should be attended to specially.

Fast recovery does not mean the parent should ignore the problem.

How Often Should My Child Have an Orthopedic Check-Up?

There is no one schedule of orthopedic examinations that can be used for all children.

In children who have not displayed any problems so far, musculoskeletal development will be checked as part of regular pediatric examinations. Children with orthopaedic problems, or past injury or other issues may need further assessment based on their physician’s recommendations.

When new problems arise, parents should get an evaluation done.

Conclusion

Early identification of Orthopaedic Problems may play a crucial role in the detection of disorders that might have an effect on the movement of the child and his/her overall development. Chronic pain, limping, swelling, changes in posture, recurrent injuries, difficulty in moving around, and abnormal limb position are just some of the symptoms that parents need to take into account.

Parents, however, need to understand that not all deviations in a child’s posture or movement imply that he/she suffers from any disorder. In some cases, normal variations of posture and movement patterns, like some specific forms of bowlegs and knock-knees will disappear with the passage of time.

Consultation with a pediatric orthopedist or an orthopedic surgeon specialising in children’s problems will help parents to find out if their child needs more attention and additional tests.

In this context, Nanjappa can be considered a healthcare destination providing patients with professional orthopaedic examination. The key factors in this case are timely examination, correct diagnosis, individualized treatment and maintenance of healthy movement pattern of a child.

FAQs

Pediatric orthopedic surgery involves the diagnosis and treatment of bones, joints, muscles, spine, limbs, and movement disorders in children and teens.

2. When should I take my child to a pediatric orthopedic specialist?

Think of visiting a pediatric orthopedist if your kid is experiencing constant pain, limping, injury, poor posture, difficulty in walking, swelling, or any other problem related to bones and joints.

3. What are the most common orthopedic problems in children?

The common disorders include fractures, sports injuries, scoliosis, development of proper alignment problems, foot and ankle disorders, gait problems, and some congenital musculoskeletal disorders.

4. Why do children’s bones heal faster than adults?

Bone growth in children is quite capable of repairing itself and remodelling. Nevertheless, certain fractures may impair the process of bone development and hence require medical attention.

5. How often should my child have an orthopedic check-up?

A healthy child does not require orthopedic visits in addition to the regular ones. However, a child suffering from a certain condition or showing symptoms of any disease might be referred for further visits.
